Wow…Who Knew? Oh Wait, I Did.

by Meghan on May 23, 2008

Sheesh. I’m naive. I thought when I wrote this post the other day that the most controversial thing would be the light switch. I was wrong.

If you check out the comments of that post, you’ll see how my dear, lovely, Christian Conservative (should there be a comma there, or not? I can’t decide) friend Angie responded. She thinks, in no uncertain terms, that I’m going to Hell. And in her point of view, Hell is a VERY BAD, VERY HOT, VERY LONELY place.

It’s true. I even motivated her to write a post detailing that…this post. A well written, very passionate post on her beliefs. You can guess that I don’t feel the same. This is my comment, that I left on her site, to what she wrote:

“I love you, but as you already know, I ABSOLUTELY disagree with you on everything you wrote.

Having said that, I don’t think you’re a hater because you disagree with homosexuality. I think it’s discriminatory to not allow homosexuals to marry or want them to have the full rights and privileges of other human beings. Simply because of their sexual orientation.

I don’t believe in God, but I do believe in people. And that all people, regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or any other “differentiating” factor, are equal and should be treated as such. And that all people should be treated with respect and kindness and good will. And honor.

And Vagina isn’t a bad word. :0)

I believe that the bible was written by people who were trying to lead, to make change and to give people something to believe in. I believe that people believe whole-heartedly in the bible because they need something to believe in. To help them make sense of the world. To give them something to work towards. I also believe that this is why people believe in science and evolution and the power of nature simply being the power of nature. The creation of the Earth being an awesome example of the that power. The good of people simply being the good in people. The good and bad choices people make simply being that…the good and bad choices WE make. I believe in giving MYSELF credit for my mistakes and my achievements.

I believe that when I die, because I lived a good life and was a good person, that I’ll be rewarded for that. I’m not sure how, but I believe in it. I don’t believe in the pearly gates of Heaven or God being there to check “yes” or “no” on my entrance ticket. It makes me sad (for you) to think that you believe that even though your friends are good people that we’ll spend our eternity in Hell, just because we don’t believe in your God.

I think I might just cut and paste this and put it into a post of my own! (Oh look, I did just that!)

Having said that, I’m here today and I’ll be here tomorrow. Because regardless of your views on religion or some social issues, I still adore you and will always care what you have to say, even if I don’t agree with it.”

And then I added this in another comment, because I forgot it in my first novel comment.

“And also…ALSO? If any liberal stops reading you because of this post, then they need to pull the stick out of their ass. K? Thanks. Mwah.”

And also? I can’t get behind a God who would supposedly love all people equally, but then because some don’t believe in him or believe in what the Bible says, would damn them to a fiery hell for eternity. I just don’t get how that works. But I guess that’s just me.

For the record: I agree with you. And also? I LOVE Angie! And it just occurred to me with your new font, this? (o) (o) looks like boobies, yeah? Look at that how I put boobies in your comments.

There are not nearly enough boobies in my comments.

Boobies & Vagina’s.

Vagina is not a bad word. You are right. We never say it in this house, though, because I HAVE WAY TOO MANY PENISES FLYING AROUND!!

Thanks for your comment/debate. Here is my response:
Meg, Based on this mentality of “discriminatory for homosexuals not to have basic rights as other human beings,” (Which I am not saying gays are not entitled to basic human rights – just marriage) what about the unborn??? Where are their rights? Is a baby a baby just before it is about to come out of his mother’s womb, but a fetus and part of his mother just a few weeks prior? Where does life begin and where does it have the right to survive? Who can define that, then? That I DO NOT GET.

Also, the “good enough,” I am so glad that my savior died for me, so I never have to be good enough. I strive to be a better person because of what he did for me, but I can’t get to heaven on my own. I need to believe in Jesus – He made it THAT EASY for me. He made it that EASY for everyone. The sad part is when we think it has to be that hard to be “good enough.” How good is good enough? I would spend my whole life worried that I was not being “good enough.” What is the standard? What about the child abuser that is a good teacher and civil leader? What about the good paster that is not a good parent? What about the great dad who makes decisions at work that intentionally negatively affect others? How good is good enough? I shudder at the thought that I would be rewarded for what I have done when I die. I better go start making ammends and selling all my belongings and taking my kids to a compound somewhere to spread the good news and help the less fortunate. That is sarcasm, but you get my point.

Also, God is not discriminatory. That is what is so great about Him. He gives us all free will to choose Him. He makes it easy, but if the choice is a clear and decisive NO, then, sadly, so be it.

And by the way, I was going to write this post soon anyway, but you just inspired me to do it this week. So, thanks.

Love you and your wine country dwelling family and your beautiful little boys and your liberal crazy blog. MWUAH right back at ya. Oops. Sorry, wipe that lip gloss off your cheek, mmmkay??

I am a bit too tired to formulate a good response to all of this, but really all I want to say is – it is soooooo refreshing to see two people with two very different viewpoints talking and debating and agreeing to disagree but still be friendly and civil and sending out lip-gloss smeared kisses to each other. Honestly? This little back-and-forth, despite the weighty issues being discussed on my computer screen a bit too early on a Saturday morning, put a huge smile on my face. Because I know you both feel really passionately about this, with diametrically opposite opinions. And yet you can still be friends and not rant and rave and try to tear each other down. And that? That makes me happy. No matter what I believe about the above issues, I firmly believe civil discussions about them instead of angry shouting matches are necessary. And here we have one. And no matter if no opinions are changed by it, simply having the discussion helps.

I agree with you, also. (And I seriously wish I had figured out the boobies thing.)

You and I share very similar views about these things. It makes me nuts when the laws in our country seek to limit rights because of religious views. It’s changing, but it’s a slow change, and it can’t happen soon enough for me.

I just left an impassioned and long comment over on Angie’s post.

And now I’m way too stressed out for a Saturday afternoon! Still, the debate is invigorating, and I admire both of you for opening up these pages for everyone to state her/his opinion.

I’m with Z, it makes my legally trained heart skip beats with joy when these kind of discussions can be just that, discussions. You are two lovely ladies!

On the opinion front, Meghan, I’m with you, girl. MWAH! (looks good in all caps).

Just to add my rant to this polerized topic. My blood boils whenever someone (many someones, for whom I will never vote!!) suggests changing our beautiful, flexible, stood the test of time, one of kind, history changing constitution so that it would DISCRIMINATE against people based on sexual orientation. How DARE they? This sacred (can I say that without being religious) document has survived so much hatred, discrimination and social change. It has evolved almost always for the better. We have defeated and deleted clauses discriminating against woman and minorities. And now, some would send it spiralling backwards 100 years and add in discrimination.

Argggghhh. I need a glass of wine.

Angie, we just have to agree to absolutely, completely, diametrically disagree. I think you’re insane for your beliefs and you think I’m just as insane for mine :0) But we like & respect each other nonetheless. Isn’t America wonderful?

Just discovered this blog and could have written *this* post myself as it is exactly how I feel about both the right of homosexuals and religion. Thanks for writing it.

I also deeply applaud the fact that you and Angie maintain a friendship amongst such differences. And, Angie, I was so looking forward to your comment, which I enjoyed – but I didn’t understand what your actual point was in that second paragraph in terms of the “why”, I just didn’t really get it. Perhaps I need to come on over to your neck ‘o the woods to read your post. :)

Also? Liked the boobies too.

It’s probably too early for me to really process most of the stuff in this post right now (ha), but I just wanted to say that I really like your writing style and the fact that you don’t care what people think, you just put it out there! I will definitely be subscribing to your page! Also, I was watching the View the other day and Whoopi Goldberg made a very good point (even though, trust me, I don’t usually get my philosophical ideas from celebrities by any means). They were talking about how most people view God as a man, not a woman. And she said she was surprised because she didn’t think of God as a man or a woman, but more like a general presence inside of all of us. It just reminded me of that when you said “I don’t believe in God but I do believe in people.” What she said gave me a new perspective. And I kind of hope that is true, because I agree with you, it is VERY hard to believe in a God that supposedly loves each and every one of us unconditionally, but would banish people to hell for eternity.
