Dylan’s First Black Eye

by Meghan on August 14, 2008

Well, sort of black eye. It’s not as bad today as I thought it was going to be. So that’s good. But DJ’s worried that when we take him to preschool tomorrow that they’re going to contact Child Protective Services. I’m pretty confident that they’re used to 3 year old boys being banged up, but either way, Dylan’s more than happy to show it off and explain how it happened. Which isn’t a “cool” story. DJ wants to come up with some sort of thrilling tale to explain it. Men.

See?! It’s not THAT bad. And it will match the scar he’s got under his lip from last August when he fell on his cup and it went right through to the other side. THAT looked like this:

And if you’re extra astute, you’re thinking “Last August?! Wasn’t Zach born last August?!” And the answer to THAT would be YES. He was. He was eleven days old when he made his first trip to the ER. Luckily it wasn’t for him and he looked something like this (except he was in his car seat and he was wearing clothes.  I promise):

Which is pretty much what I looked like by the end of the day. Well, more like this maybe:

But in the fetal position and not nearly as preshus.  And there may or may not have been a glass of wine beside me.  The details are fuzzy.

YES, I drank while I breastfed.  I gave up alcohol for 37 weeks of pregnancy, you think I was capable of staying off the sauce any longer than that?!  I think not.

Poor little guy. I hate it when they hurt themselves like that. My little one did a similar thing to his lip climbing on the entertainment center and his father wanted to come up with a cooler story too. Men…I tell ya!

Those baby pictures are just precious. Sometimes I miss them being that small

Once my 9 month old daughter slipped in the tub and hit her cheekbone. It must have been JUST the right angle because she ended up with a full on black eye that took forever to go away. I got some very wary looks when I would take her out in public…

He’s just too cute. I’m glad the black eye is going away quickly.

MiniMe got his first black eye before he was a year old (in fact, just in time for it to NOT be faded for birthday party pictures). I was panicked and tried to explain to daycare how he was cruising and fell smack on the corner of the table. She laughed and said “You think this is the first one I’ve seen.” Yeah, they’ll understand.

Ugh. Boys. He’s in good spirits, the bounce back like nothin’.

I should totally find the video of Andy hosing HRH down (aka giving him a bath) on the back deck when he broke his leg at 19 months. HRH slipped in the puddle made when one plays in the dog’s water.

So far, so good. No one’s come to take the boys away from us but I’m still happier when the injure themselves in front of witnesses.

Oh, the cuteness. Stop that, it hurts me. And AMEN on drinking wine while breastfeeding. We sacrifice enough. Mine survived.

I don’t think preschool will be as worried about his eye as all the marks from the duct tape.

So far he is taking after his mother in ER visits. – show some of your scars someday.

HA HA I only had to give up drinking for 29 weeks. And I totally drank before I knew I was pregnant, so I really only gave it up for 27 weeks.I WIN! Except for, you know, that whole preemie thing. But that is water under the bridge!!

It looks like you two have done an awesome job rehearsing your story for the ‘authorities’!

Just a few words of advice — with Dylan’s track record of accumulating facial injuries, be very careful when passing your camera to DJ (especially if visiting the Capitol), and don’t let the little guy sneak up on you, or it could be deja-vu all over again. I’m still horrified when I think back to YOUR E.R. VISIT(many moons ago) thanks to ME…Sorry…

Poor kid. My son got his first black eye last Christmas at the tender age of 26 months–I was horrified. But he is like a bull in a china shop, so he’s pretty much constantly bruised up…I am just used to it now!

Hmmmm… black eye stories… kicked by a raging rhinocerus? Punched while doing karate to defend his mother and baby brother? Fell from a long height while scaling a vertical rock to retrieve, um, something? You totally need a good story for this! That’s what injuries are FOR, didn’t you know? What’s the point, otherwise?!?!

Hope y’all feel better tomorrow (and for that, I prescribe wine. For you, not the boys. For them, a really fun story to tell… Like the rhinos. Or lions. Or something of that sort…)

Cute! Cute! Cute!

My mother accidentally pulled my brother’s arm out of the socket when he was nine. They were just playing and he jerked his arm away really fast. He hasn’t let her forget that one. I remember he told EVERYONE!!! haha! The doctor just laughed. “It happens.”

Hey, and don’t forget, people used to SMOKE while they were pregnant! Crazy, you would think they knew it was bad for you and the baby?!

I have two boys myself and have made quite a few trips to the ER…one was for a black eye (MRI to make sure no bones broken by the eye socket…yay, none) I think it’s more abnormal to not have a black eye when you’re three (both mine had quite a two or three at that age…I mean hey they’re door knob height at that age)

oh and as this is the first visit to your blog — i read and read and enjoyed it so much, loved the letters, duct tape, wonderful idea…loved your sister’s rant below…i can’t tell you how many emails i get from my ‘well-meaning’ conservative friends, just to let me know that ‘i’m so wrong’….funny, none of them appreciate the ‘snopes.com’ replies i end up sending.

I think that drinking wine while breastfeeding will definitely be happening

In fact, drinking wine sometime next week might happen, too. :-) A glass of white won’t hurt!

Don’t worry, he will be fine!

What’s that, Me? I still have that scar from running into the pool table as a three-year-old? Hmm. Good point, me.

Just kidding! He will be fine…and possiblly sporting a badass scar.

What are you doing to those children……lol.

When Sean was born my doctor had to use forceps. They ended up bruising his lips and face. You could see where the forceps had been used. It was like he’d been beat up before even taking a breath of air.

It was so sad.

Jessi- Sometimes I think their sole purpose in life is to terrify their mother’s and entertain their father’s! And Zach is turning ONE tomorrow (gah!) and I’m feeling my ovaries ache this weekend…especially after looking at all his baby photos! :0(

HI tz! Thanks for stopping by! An MRI?! Yikes. I’m sure THAT was fun. Luckily (knock on wood) we haven’t had any “serious” injuries just yet. Although I’m sure they’re coming!

And Snopes is one of my favorite websites. That and TMZ, of course! :0)

Mike- We can compare scars next time we meet up. I’ve got some good ones. Falling sideways off some stairs (no railing) and landing head first on the concrete floor below was the BEST one, but getting hit in the face with a camera (accidentally by my dad as he alluded to in comments) on the steps of the Capitol was the most EXCITING.

I feel a post coming on.

I love how he shows off his “war wound” again at the end of the video!! HA!

And that infant picture of Zach with the thumb and all it’s cuteness? To.Die.For.

Chicks dig scars!! I wouldn’t worry too much. Having boys….you will be at the ER or the walk in clinic many more times and you will have more wine wine you get home….it’s a cycle.
