It’s a Brand New Day!

by Meghan on November 5, 2008

Iiiiitttttt’s aaaaaaa brand new day!

It’s a brand new day!!

It’s a Brand. New. Day!

That’s a song that my sister (and I) used to sing a lot.  And for some reason, it popped into my head in the middle of the night last night.  And it seemed like the perfect title for today’s post.  Because it IS a brand new day in America.  In so many ways.

Black or white, or anywhere in between, we are ALL American’s and we are all proud of our country.

Christian, Agnostic, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Sikh,  Taoist, Wiccan, Scientologist, Atheist, or anything else, we are ALL American’s and we are all proud of our country.

We are not a country, or a world for that matter, of black and white.  We are made up of many colors, and that is how we must view our future.  There is no clear answer to any issue.  There is no simple solution to the problems we face.  We won’t always agree, but we have to be able to see where the other side is coming from.

We have to FORCE ourselves to see beyond our own black and white view of things.  We have to force ourselves to see things from other’s perspectives.  We have to force ourselves to see things in a new light.  We have to get beyond the divisiveness that has succeeded in turning us into two separate groups.  We’ve somehow become an “Us” and a “Them”.

We must come together.  As one unified Nation.  The UNITED States of America.

We’ve been lied to in the past.  It’s left us cynical and unable to trust.  We have good reason to be suspicious of our leaders.  But it’s time to be hopeful.  It’s time to put faith in Barack Obama’s ability and willingness to bring us together.  To allow US to have a voice in what happens to OUR country, to us.

To put faith in the fact that he’s not hellbent on destroying our Nation.  That he will protect our country at all costs.  That he’s not hoping for defeat in Iraq.  He’s not going to ruin Capitalism or turn us into Communists.  We’re better than that, and we must believe it.

I have that faith, do you?

Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.  Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House – a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.  As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, “We are not enemies, but friends…though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection.” And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn – I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.  – Barack Obama  11/4/2008

*And I’ve never done it before, but because today is about being positive and hopeful, I will, without regret, delete any comment left here that even hints at negativity. You’ve been warned.*

Great post, Megs! I wish I could have put myself into a positive frame of mind for my post today. Instead, all I can think about is prop 8! Is it too early to break open a bottle of wine?

The next line of the song is
“It’s a day we’ve never, ever had before.”

Truer than ever.
I loved last night.

Great post Meghan!

I’ve had faith in him since the beginning and I’m so glad I got to witness what I did last night. I have faith that we as a country can change. I do. Yes, we can!

We kept our girls up late so they could watch the history. They were both rooting for Obama, probably because we were, but I think our tears of joy convinced them that we were more invested in it than just a history lesson.

It’s interesting, the false notions of “one” and “separate”. We’re all connected, however hippy-dippy that sounds, and we need to start acting like it.

Very nice Meghan! I truly hope and pray that we can all come together as a nation and that everyone will step up and do what’s best for us as a whole and not just to better themselves. I am very hopefully that everyone will do the things they said they would do. Thanks so much for putting to words what has been floating in my head today. (How do you get into my head…LOL)

I SO agree. But I also have hope because, my daughter, who is going on 15 already has the mentality that has eliminated Us v. Them. In their Postmodern minds, her generation just doesn’t get the big deal. And I am so glad. Her generation is so different from my own (and FTR, I also don’t see Us v. Them, but many, many of my friends and acquaintances do) but I think her generation will change it, permanently. It is our job to teach them and to help them grow, while trying to pave the way for the Change that’s comin. I have hope, for the first time in 8 years, and real joy in the thought of what’s to come in this country.

I cried last night.. CRIED. I’ve never cried during a news program. I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I just wish the news would stop being so negative ALREADY. Give the guy a minute to breathe okay? Loved the post.

I can’t wait for Jan. 20 when we can watch this man go from president-elect to President of the United States. Amazing.

You are more than welcome to come stay with me for the Inauguration! I’ve never seen so much celebrating on Capitol Hill as I did on Tuesday night. Fireworks, cheering, crying… so fantastic. I think Jan 20th will surpass that by leaps and bounds!

Meghan! I haven’t spoke to you since the election, but YAY OBAMA! Anyway, so great seeing you and Zach at Maddie’s party! I would have loved to hang out more, but I had so many folk at there to deal with (especially my mother who gets sore easy!).Anyway…hopefully H and I, and maybe you and DJ, can hang out soon. And I hear rumors that with Casey coming to town we may see ya soon too?

I sat and watched his speech and felt chills go up and down my spine as I cried with sheer joy. I have always voted in every election, sometimes for the lesser of two evils, never feeling the way I felt Tues. night. I feel about Barack the way that I think people must have viewed President Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr. Someone who gives us hope, someone who makes us believe not only in our country but in our selves and our ability to pull ourselves out off the mess we are in.I truly believe that we will be a nation we ALL can be proud to belong to, not just the people who supported Barack.
