First let me start off by saying that I had an amazing, wonderful, fantabulous time in Chicago. Fantabulous is totally a word, and if you’re one of the people who had a hand in getting me there, you’re super special fantabulous. For reals. So, thank you.
The good FAR outweighs the bad and the ugly, but I felt as if I needed to address all three. Because, you know, what fun is it to read a post where someone gushes about something. It’s really quite boring. The gory details are what everyone wants, and the gory details are what everyone shall get.
So…let’s begin! *claps hands in excitement*
The Good
- Getting to spend Wednesday in LA with Heather and Mike.
- Having dinner with Jayneoni, who is fantabulous in her own right.
- The awesome people on the Party Plane.
- The crew of our Southwest flight to Chicago, who graciously put up with us.
- Katie, who I became “close” friends with on the limo ride to the hotel.
- Roaming Chicago with my friend Fran.
- Seeing people I’ve missed since last July. Like Amy, Jennifer, Shannon, Dawn, Lotus, Gudrun, Loralee & Leslie.
- Seeing people I saw in April, but having this be happier circumstances. Like VDog, Tanis, Rachel, Shannon, Maya, Maura & Anissa.
- Spending time with other fantabulous people, whether I’d met them before or not. Like Renee, Jen, Greis, Stacey, Issa, Kirstin, Yvonne, Stefanie, Marinka, Brittany & Janet.
- Meeting so many other fabulous people I can’t even link to them all or I’ll never get this posted.
- Seeing lightning and hearing THUNDER!!! Even if it only happened once.
- Some people are JUST like their online persona.
- Some people are NOT AT ALL like their online persona.
- Getting my hair did by Anna, the super fantabulous stylist at the Suave booth.
- The #SuperSecretPizzaParty. Which will hopefully be a yearly event.
- Feeling comfortable enough in my own blogging skin that I didn’t feel like I had to pretend to like people I don’t
- Feeling comfortable enough in my own blogging skin that I didn’t feel like I had to impress anyone
- Feeling comfortable enough to spend time concentrating on the people I WANTED to see, and not on the ones the internet tells me I should hang out with. Because, you know, they’re the “cool” ones.
The Bad
- The “Water Situation.” I bitched about this A LOT this weekend. As someone who used to plan corporate events for a fancy schmancy hotel, I was ridiculously disappointed with the lack of water available to conference attendees. I totally get the effort to save the world of many a plastic bottle that would need to be recycled. But for future reference BlogHer event planners, put reusable water bottles in our bags. Brand them. The attendees will use them, and BELIEVE ME, it will be appreciated.
- The fact that the hotel provided bottled water at the parties and charged people for it. That’s what pitchers and glasses are for, assholes.
- Holding a conference for internet addicted people at a hotel that doesn’t have wifi in the guest rooms. Duh.
- #NikonHatesBabies is the stupidest fucking thing I’ve ever heard. It’s unfortunate that the guest limitations weren’t clearly stated to attendees, but REALLY? Saying Nikon hates babies because the fancy BAR at which they held their event has a 21 & over policy? Ridiculous.
- The pictures I’ve seen of myself need to be shine corrected. Good lord my forehead is shiny.
- I missed seeing/meeting a bunch of people I wanted to. Boo.
- I didn’t get to spend NEARLY enough time with everyone I wanted to. I propose that we schedule at LEAST a week in NYC next year. We can sleep 10 to a room if we have to. For reals.
- I missed seeing Paula Deen. Dammit. I love her.
- I missed the Vaginally Challenged Bloggers session. I can roll my eyes with the best of ‘em.
- The DRAMA. Because HOLY HELL people, are we 15 year old hormonal teenage girls, or are we grown ass women? Sometimes I wonder.
- Some people are JUST like their online persona.
- Some people are NOT AT ALL like their online persona.
- Some people don’t understand that the world doesn’t revolve around them. And every situation isn’t about YOU.
- The fact that the saying “With friends like these, who needs enemies?” popped into the conversation, and into my head, on numerous occasions.
The Ugly
- The disgusting behavior, exhibited by a few select people, when it came to procuring swag. It’s free crap people. Not diamonds or cash. And even if it were, your behavior would still be objectionable.
- The backlash against those of us who got free swag. In an orderly fashion, of course. Once again, it’s free crap people. Get over it. If it wasn’t something I would use, I didn’t take it. If it was in a bag and it wasn’t something I would use, I gave it away. I’m not going to apologize for taking a free one time use sample of laundry detergent, or sample size jars of play-doh for my kids. I’m also not a whore for doing it. So, #alohahard and get over yourselves.
- Some people are JUST like their online persona.
- Some people are NOT AT ALL like their online persona.
I was lucky in that I was a removed party from all the drama. I witnessed some of it firsthand, heard of some of it from involved parties and read about some of it on the interwebz. I suppose it’s to be expected when you get 1,500 people together for anything. Especially when the majority of the people are women. There were no knock down, drag out fights, though I heard there were ALMOST a few. Which, really, I would have loved to see and would have totally taken me back to standing in the hallway at high school while two girls went at it. And not in THAT way, perverts. Also? If there HAD been a fight, I may or may not have picked a favorite and cheered silently from the sidelines. You’ll never know.
Overall, I had a FABULOUS time in Chicago. Come hell or high water, I’ll be in New York next year. I’m going to take MochaMomma’s advice and start saving now. I suggest you do too! Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on ALL the fun!

Great post.
You, were fantastic to hang out with. I adore you.
Ummm my post didn’t gush exactly but… umm yah.
I am completely on board with the water thing.. It WAS SO HARD to get water.
I’m saving my pennies and quarters NOW!!!!
B.E.S.T. BLOGHER RECAP YET! More evidense of your awesomeness.
i’m in for ’10 and MUST see you.
that’s all.
oh yeah, and well said…
A-fucking-MEN girl. Pretty sure you’re one of my favorite people around these here internets. Partly because we are super great at sharing hugs and exchanging eye rolls.
FUCK YES WOMAN!!!
Love. This. Post.
Can’t wait to see you again.
Yeeeaaaa. Just? Yeeaaaa. You, my darling, were everything I thought and more. I’m EXACTLY like my online persona. As are you, babe. Genuine. Lovely. YOU.
Next time let’s actually hang out some. I regret that a lot. Oh, fuckthat, I’ll come see y’all in person. We gotzta hangz! XOXO
I love you a little bit right now.
That is all.
I too had a fab time. Was very excited to meet you! Saving up for next year – see you there!
what would women be if there weren’t loads of drama a little bitch-slapping?
Wished I could have had more time to chat with you. What I did discover is you are awesome 24/7. Next time we must spend more time together.
Great post. Ya’all keep this up and my post will be two words!
Awesome recap, Meghan, and everything very well said! (You dirty play-doh takin’ whore.) I LOVED meeting you and getting to hang out for a little bit! Hope to see you again sooner than latah!
It sounds like everyone had a great time at BlogHer ’09. Even though I didn’t go, I am enjoying reading the posts of those who did. Thank you for sharing!
I luff you and I’m so glad I got to see you again under happier circumstances. Love this post. xoxo
I didn’t get to meet you this year and that stinks, but I couldn’t agree more with everything you said.
I grabbed my own water bottle on my way to the airport though and whenever I saw a cooler in one of the meeting rooms, I filled up. However, even WITH all that forward thinking on my part (which seriously NEVER happens), I did not drink nearly enough water as I should have and came home thinking that I needed an IV.
Hope to meet you next year in NYC!
I love you, I loved seeing you, and I am now wondering how much I am or am not like my online persona.
You rock. Not that you didn’t already know that. I miss you already. When are you coming up here again?
You said it all perfectly! Loves you much!!!
Love the post!! Can’t wait for 2010, and the chance to meet you!
I have to admit, I’d like this post better if you included just a few linky-loos to the “JUST like or NOT AT ALL like” their online persona folks. Cause, I’m nosy like that.
Sounds like you had a fun time. NYC might be my year.
I am so glad that you had a good time and enjoyed yourself.
I am kinda laughing that your number one on the bad list was the water, cause I bitched about it all dang weekend. Also, I kept paying for water from the gift shop and I still feel like my skin is falling off.
So, uh can we go back now? I think a week sounds awesome, although then I’d just need more time to sleep after the fact.
and wait, Paula Deen was there and I MISSED HER??? There was just so much to do, so many people to meet and I know I missed out on meeting a ton.
Ditto, ditto, ditto and DITTO. So glad we got to know each other beyond the AL list. I fucking adore you and love the way you think! XOXO
Great recap. It was awesome to be on the party plane with you and everybody else.
I was part of the Green Team for BlogHer to eliminate plastic water bottles, but I too was frustrated with how hidden the water cisterns were, and how impossible it was to tell where the glasses were to use those water cisterns. So, I’m taking all the complaints to heart and will raise them should I have the privilege of being on the BlogHer Green Team again. And even if I’m not, I’m still reporting in on what worked and what didn’t this year . . .
Yes, yes yes, expect my people that I met and loved list is a little different.
I have been to every BlogHer and this was, but far, my favourite. Although next year I obviously have to spend some time with you because you are obviously awesome.
jennui
Love this post.
Love YOU!
The water situation was HORRIBLE. Meeting you was AWESOME!!!
I’m definitely making plans for a trip to NYC next year and I’m totally up for staying a while longer, because I love the city.
XOXO
I am allowing the past to have the good shine brighter than the bad. And in 2010, looking forward to more good!
I think you’re brilliant. Peace.
Um, yes. All of this post. Just YES.
I’m still jealous about the #supersecretpizzaparty. I spent 3 days in Chicago and didn’t have a single slice of pizza, nevermind Chicago-style deep dish. I feel thoroughly cheated by that.
I loved-loved-LOVED getting to meet you. You were one of my favorite people of the weekend just because you were like “eh, I don’t like her” whenever a couple of bloggers’ names came up, and I love that you were so honest & up front about it. Most people wouldn’t have the nerve. Also, you’re like a hundred times prettier in real life (you know, compared to your cartoon image up there or your tiny Twitter avatar). So fun. Can’t wait to see you next year in NYC!
You missed a good: Getting to sleep next to me.
Bravo! I was so frustrated with everyone talking about all the drama – made me glad to not be a part of it. Finally a post that puts it into perspective and reminds people that we’re grown-ass women! How do so many forget this?
Anyway, I really, really, really hope to make it to NYC next year to meet you and other awesome people!
you are a riot
I chose not to address any of the bad/ugly because I didn’t think I could do it justice and because I knew that someone else IE YOU would put it all together into a perfect package, and you totally did. Hope I get to meet you next year.
Loved this. You captured it beautifully. And dude, super secret New York style pizza is at the top of my 2010 to do list.
(Also, lest it came off like I was calling those who got swag, swag whores, please please know that I meant the crazy people willing to kill for it…)
So glad I got to meet you! Next year I hope to be around for the whole thing!
The water situation was seriously unacceptable. Seriously.
As is true with many other women I am saddened that you were one of the ones I missed spending time with and that must be rectified.
Rectified I say!
(Rectified sounds dirty. I’m giggling now. Like a 15 year old girl. And this is the ONLY time when it’s appropriate to reflect the behavior of a 15 year old girl.)
Next time you are required to just grab me by the back of the hair. That’s sorta the only way to get me to stop talking when I’m yakking in front of a group of people. I promise not to hurt you.
You didn’t even link to me, and now I’m going to start DRAMA because it’s all about ME. ME, I SAY!
Love you : )
Darling, you were at the top of my ‘didn’t get to spend nearly enough time with her’ list. Someday, I’m coming to L.A. to force you to focus on ME, ME ME
Also, geez, as usual, I am clueless as drama swirls around me. Clue.less. But, I think I like it that way. xo
love you lady – your forehead could be layered in crisco and I’d love you all the more for it
Um, YEAH, you are gonna be here next year!!!
No Water, No Wifi, No Paula Deen…damn girl thank goodness you are so awesomely awesome or it could have been really bad!
Amy, her forehead IS layered in crisco. It’s how she stays looking so young.
It was lovely to see you again, dude.
{Also, you didn’t get a bright orange water bottle in your BlogHer bag at check in? I did, or maybe I’m on crack.
}
I was oblivious to all the swag drama until I read about it on teh interwebz. I’m kind of glad I’m out of the loop…
And I’m with ya on the water and the wifi. Those are two things I can’t live without!
Yes, to all of the above. Just YES.
You’re definitely making me think a little more positively about going to the 2010 one in NYC.
Great post.
Even though I’ve not been to a blogging con [yet], I have been to a few geeky cons, & yes, the congruency of people & their online personalities can be awesome, distressing, or simply interesting. ;p
“The Bad” was my favorite section!!!!
“Alohahard” was my favorite part of this entire post. I effing heart you!
http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/hawaiian-hotel/1056148/
Drama? What drama?? I am so out of the drama loop. I had a great time, but of course did not get to spend nearly enough time fawning over your Target jewelry. Next year in New York I am going to fawn all over you and your jewelry. I’ll even bring you a water bottle.
And I was annoyed with all the swag. The last thing I need is more stuff to carry home. The expo hall gave me a headache.
Nice post! Looking forward to hanging out with you next year! (Although I hope to see you in-person before then, my dear.)
Loved this blog!! I so wish I could have been there and seen it all firsthand! Also would love to have met you! You seem like a totally cool chica!!!
