Birthday Party Planning FAIL

by Meghan on August 10, 2009

meghanavatarZach, my youngest, turns 2 on the 17th.  As per my usual lofty ideas, I’ve concocted a plan for a HUGE party.  Of course, it’s less than two weeks away and I have NOTHING DONE.  The problem is that there is a disconnect between what my MIND wants and what my BODY is willing to do.

As in, I reserved a group picnic space at a local lake.  A local lake I’ve never been to.  Because visiting it would require packing up the kids, a picnic lunch, bathing suits, sunscreen, etc.  And that?  Is a LOT of work.  I mean, how much do I really need to know about the site?  From the map it LOOKS like it’s kind of near the water.  I assume there’s a BBQ of some sort.  Running water?  Possibly.  Electricity?  Maybe.

I haven’t given much thought to what kind of food I’m going to serve.  I’ll probably end up with hamburgers and hot dogs, a bag of potato chips, some fruit that I’ll rope a family member into cutting up and maybe, if I’m feeling extra energetic, some DIP.  From a jar.

There will, of course, be liquor.  Because it wouldn’t be a proper 2nd Birthday Party without copious amounts of alcohol.  It’s how we roll, yo.  Now I just have the big decision of what KIND of liquor.  Bottled mojitos?  Beer?  Pre-mixed margaritas?  Probably whatever turns out to be cheapest and easiest.

The ONLY thing I  have already is the Spongebob themed birthday stuff.  And, honestly, the only reason I have THAT is because it was sent to me to review.  Like, two months ago.  Whoops.

But, YAY, because I have a cute little assortment of Spongebob plates, cups napkins and Krabby Patty looking candy thingies to give to all the kids.  I’m sure their parents will love me for it.

I’ve also got a little packet of Spongebob themed recipe ideas. Which I should probably LOOK at before I settle on my awesome food options from above.

{BRB, I’m going to peruse it….}

Oddly enough, the only thing that will really work for our Picnic/BBQ is the Pineapple Palooza Punch, which I’m thinking I could add some Rum to.  Hmmm…

Anyway, the good people at MomSelect and Nickelodeon have partnered to put together a handy dandy little site with Spongebob and Dora recipe and game/activity ideas!  It’s perfect for the lazy busy party planner in all of us!

And for those of you who are too lazy busy to get to the store for all your party planning needs, we have TWO sets of party ware to giveaway!

The Giveaway

We will be giving away one set each of Spongebob and Dora the Explorer Celebration Kits.  Each kit contains 8 plates, 8 napkins, 8 cups, 8 treats and one Recipe & Activity packet.

To enter, simply leave a comment letting us know which set you would like to win. The drawing will remain open until 12pm (Eastern) on Monday, August 17th, at which point we will pick the winners (using random.org) from all eligible entries.   The winners will be notified and will have until Thursday, August 20th to email us their shipping address.  If we do not hear from the winner(s) by August 20th, we will pick a new winner for that Celebration Kit.

GOOD LUCK and happy party planning.  Or, really, happy party execution.  The planning part is easy.

My son is into both ( I know, Dora is supposed to be for girls) so I’ll take either one, happily. You’ll also be pissed to learn that I already have his 4th birthday party booked…at a local farm. For next May! Haahaaaaa. No, seriously, we were there for another party and won it in a drawing so I booked it before the nice lady who owns the farm could change her mind. That is a $300 value! So, go ahead and give me 8 plates and stuff cause there is no way I should have to pay for anything for his birthday! Right?
That would help me get back to aiming low!
Thank you! (love this site!

I’m not entirely sure that the likes of you are allowed around these parts…don’t you feel out of place?!

Nice work on the free party location!

I wasn’t aware of any kids parties where alcohol was on the top of the shopping list. For my daughter’s 5th bday party in July, BYOB was part of the invitation.

It’s like I don’t even know you right now.

yeah, I have a hard time planning much for a party, I usually leave it all until the last minute. I’ll have to change that when the kids get a bit older and start having people besides family members at the party.

as for the giveaway, I’ll have to choose Dora. I cannot stand Spongebob, he grosses me out, so my kids aren’t very aware of him lol

I don’t need the party goods but I just wanted to say that I can relate to this. My son’s birthday is this Wednesday. Party on Saturday. Nothing is done. Taking kids to the beach NEXT WEEK! Forgot to book the damn hotel. Now there is nothing available. When I’m aim low, I go all out.

My son’s 3rd birthday is September 7th, my daughter’s 6th birthday is September 25th. I am having a C-section for baby #3 September 22nd, or possibly earlier….so with two birthdays and a birth next month, I could use the extra help! Both of my children love both cartoons, so I would be happy with either set.

I know this year this sounds horendous, but just think in the future, I can aim extra low and only throw one birthday party per year for all three of my children. Is that planning, or what?

My friend is having face painters at her daughter’s fifth birthday party. Facepainters. I don’t even want to take my daughter. I don’t want her to see that some kids get that as an option. Comparing that to the McDonalds playroom she had only highlights my shittiness.

I know, I’m lame. First time I respond on this awesome site and it is to hopefully win something. I would love to win the spongebob loot so I can embarrass my soon to be 13 year old at his party in September, cuz isn’t that what parents are for? Or if I decide to be nice, I could also use it for my soon to be 2 year old in November. Or, I’ll just wash the paper plates use them for both. Bwahahaha. I crack myself up. Seriously though – love the new(ish) site! carry on!

Hello – I am loving this site – thanks for making me feel better on the days I feel guilty for being impatient with my 2 1/2 year old. The hubz has introduced Little Man to Spongebob, so I would be Cool Mom instead of Mean Mom if I could win him some ‘Bob stuff. Thank you!

My youngest is turning 2 in November and either would be wonderful. Thinking of having a party actually mainly as an excuse (a) to get grown ups to my house, forget kids and (b) to clean said house from top to bottom, as we only ever clean it when company is coming. So we just have to have people over or we might die.

Wait, what you’ve done *doesn’t* count as planning? So confused? I’m supposed to put *more* effort into these things? Hmmm…

I guess winning the Dora set would help me at least get a theme started…

I thought everyone was like me and decided what to eat, went grocery shopping and cleaned the day before a party. I do not understand the concept of planning ahead. :)

My youngest loves “DorDor”, so Dora please.

My son is both a Dora & Spongebob fanatic but I think his dad would only approve of the Spongebob theme!

Thanks for the opportunity!

My daughter is obsessed with Dora, and I am obsessed with alcohol, this blog was hysterical! I would like to be registered for both because my son, for free could deal with a Spongebob birthday, LOL!!!

Cookie would love the Dora set for her birthday in November!

I would say your definitely organized. I mean seriously, you picked the spot, invited people, thought about food. I find the local indoor playground, ask if they serve food and then see if I can pay extra for them to send out the invitations. You did good!
