Seasons Of Love

by Meghan on April 7, 2010

I’ve had the song from Rent, Seasons of Love, in my head for the past week.

Today marks the day that Maddie has been gone from our lives for 525,600 minutes.

Today marks the one year anniversary of the worst day that Heather and Mike have ever, will ever, experience.

Today marks the one year anniversary of the day that turned a lot of our lives upside down.

Today marks the one year anniversary of the day that proved to us that bad things can, and do, happen to good people.

Today marks the one year anniversary of the day that I learned that one little girl really CAN change the world.

Today marks the one year anniversary of the day that we learned that people all over the world, many of whom had never met her, loved that sweet little girl.

There have been 525,600 minutes since Maddie left us.

I’m confident that every single one of those minutes was filled with infinite amounts of love for her.

In every single one of those minutes there was someone around the world thinking about Maddie.

Loving Maddie.

Laughing with Maddie.

Missing Maddie.

If, according to the song, love really is the only proper measure of human life, then Maddie lived a life that was bigger and fuller than most.

It’s not fair that she’s gone.

And it will never make sense.

But we were all lucky to know her.

We are all lucky to be able to love her.

We miss you Maddie.  We love you.  Always.

Tears, lots of tears. You’re a good friend, lady. Thank you for setting such a great example for how to love when nothing makes sense. xo

Maddie touched so many people, in so many different ways. I’ll never forget the pain in my chest when I saw the Twitter update, the shock I felt, the tears that fell. And then, I was able to witness what amazing people are out there. The outpouring of love to Heather & Mike was incredible. And you, you were an amazing friend during that time.

I woke this morning with a heavy heart thinking about how cruel life can be. Heavy with thoughts of the pain Heather and Mike have to carry everyday. But then I smiled as I pictured Maddie’s sweet smile and I thought about all the love out there for her and for Heather and Mike.

Miss you Maddie.

For some reason, your post is the one that got me bawling. I never met Maddie, and I don’t know Heather and Mike, but I’ve cried with them for the past year and I will continue to do so. Their nightmare in ongoing and I wish, along with the rest of the Internet, that I could make it disappear. I’ve never been so affected by someone I never met, but this beautiful little angel has captured my heart and won’t let go. I’m wishing peace for her family today, and for everyone who grieves her loss.

“If, according to the song, love really is the only proper measure of human life, then Maddie lived a life that was bigger and fuller than most.”

That is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read. And the truth to it is breath-taking. xoxo

Maddie’s legacy shouldn’t have been this. However she’s left more greatness behind in this world than most adults will.

I know I’ll never forget her.
