Best Celebrity Couples, Real AND Make Believe

by Meghan on June 24, 2010

I hate to admit it, but when I hear about celebrity breakups, I can’t help but be a little bummed.

That’s not always the case, of course.

I mean, Charlie Sheen and Denise Richard’s breakup didn’t even register on my emotion meter.  The same can be said for Heidi and Spencer, Jake and Vienna, Britney and KFed.

You get the idea.

BUT, tell me Jake and Reese broke up and it’s as if someone ran over my puppy with their Hummer.

I’m not strong enough to deal with the heartbreak that comes with getting emotionally invested in these high profile romances.  At least when Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughan broke up in The Breakup you A) expected it, thanks to the title and B) could reason with yourself that it was a movie and therefore not a REAL breakup.

Until they split in real life and then, WTF, UNIVERSE?!  Can no one  be happy?

So now I live in fear of news of yet another fallen romance.  Who will be next?

There are some you think are safe, seeing as they’ve been together for years and years, like John Travolta and Kelly Preston or Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks. But then you hear about Al & Tipper Gore and that happy little bubble bursts like one of Jenna Jameson’s overfilled breast implants.

Who, coincidentally just split from HER boyfriend/partner/husband whatthefuckever Tino Ortiz.

All of this has me thinking, who would I be really bummed to see breakup?

  • Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi
  • Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
  • Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick
  • Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze, Jr.
  • Ben Affleck and Matt Damon
  • Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale
  • Courteney Cox Arquette & David Arquette
  • Amy Poehler & Will Arnett
  • Faith Hill & Tim McGraw
  • Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith

And then there are the movie couples.  The ones that aren’t real, but if there had been a sequel and they’d split up, I’m pretty sure I’d need therapy:

  • Princess Buttercup and Wesley, aka The Dread Pirate Roberts, aka Farm Boy (from The Princess Bride)
  • Baby and Johnny (from Dirty Dancing)
  • Sam and Annie (from Sleepless in Seattle)
  • Nickie and Terry (from An Affair to Remember)

My all time favorite celebrity couples?

It’s a tie between Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.

What couples do you love?

Or, if you’re in a “love is stupid” kind of place, what couples do you hate?

Jim and Pam. In my head, they are real.

Gotta love Harrison Ford and Callista Flockhart. Sneaky wedding, ftw!

My world was shattered when Jake and Vienna broke up. I cried, I screamed, I …. no, I yawned and thought “this is a surprise?!”

On the evil end of things… I have still not accepted Brangelina. I KNOW! I’m AWFUL! Won’t somebody think of the children?!

I heard a saying once that a Hollywood marriage is measured in dog years… so one that last 10 is like lasting 70 in the real world.

Donny & Marie… I’d lose it. Most others – not so much.

And I’m with Txtingmrdarcy – still can’t handle Brangelina. No matter what they say or how much good she does, she’ll always be the ho that broke up Jen’s marriage.

Ditto on the Brangelina thing. I keep HOPING Brad will fall in love with another hot woman on the set :) Karma and all that…

ZOH MY GAH if any of the couples you listed above separated, I would have a meltdown.

I wish I was joking.

I’m still mourning the break up of Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson. Oh how I miss Newlyweds. I would, however, have no problem being Nick Lachey’s 2nd wife. He’s hot.

LMAO. Got to ‘Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’ and just about spit my coffee all over my laptop.
I really like Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman. Who am I kidding… I’m just happy she’s not with NutJob Cruise anymore.

I would probably lose it if Tim and Faith split up. And the long term relationships really get me, too, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson would make me so sad for the state of marriage in general.

I know most people can’t handle Brangelina, but I would be very sad and surprised if they split, too.

Chandler and Monica. I would be forced to eat every tub of ice-cream within a hundred miles in an attempt to get over that one. Good thing it never had the chance to happen.

plus, in real life my husband and I ARE Chandler and Monica, so if they had broken up, I would have been forced to believe that my husband and I would also break up. Sad sad day.

What about Lois and Hal from Malcolm in the Middle? If two people were ever made for each other, it is definitely Lois and Hal.

I gave up on celebrity couples when Brad & Jen split. Cause if Jen can’t be happily married forever there’s just no HOPE!!! LOL

And you really don’t care about Jenna and her whatthefuckever e- husband, seeing as how his name is TITO not Tino. LOL :)

Fictional characters that must not break up:
Elizabeth Bennett Darcy and Mr. Darcy

Real Life:
I would have said Sandra Bull_ck (don’t know what vowel to use) and Jesse James about a year ago. Now, I’m A-OK with this break up.

A-Rod and his ego ?
