I Couldn’t Make It Up If I Tried

by Meghan on August 28, 2010

Let me tell you a little story.

Three years ago today Zach was 11 days old and Dylan was 2 1/2.  They looked a little something like this at the time:

It was early in the morning and DJ had recently left for work. I was prepping myself for a day alone with my two boys. My plans included…pretty much nothing.   Zach and I were on the couch watching the Today Show and Dylan was in my bedroom with a cup of milk watching cartoons.

Until he decided he needed to be in the living room. So he came running out of the bedroom, with the straw from his cup firmly clenched between his teeth. And then he fell. And the cup hit the floor first and forced his teeth through his lip.

And there was blood. Lots and lots of blood. And there were tears. Lots and lots of tears.

I cleaned him up the best I could and came to the realization that he would most likely need stitches, and even though it was the LAST thing I wanted to have to do, I was going to have to pack up my newborn and my bleeding, sobbing two year old and head to the ER.

And a few hours later, we left the ER a few hundred dollars poorer. And with Dylan looking like this:

Now, fast forward 2 years and 364 days.  To yesterday.  Dylan is 5, Zach is 3 (and 10 days) and Kung Fu Fetus is -4 days.  The set up is relatively similar.  I am on the couch, trying to relax.  The boys are running around like wild, burning off some energy.  DJ is on his way to a job.

The sounds of boys laughing and playing are cut short by a THUD and sudden cries and tears.  I jump off the couch to find Zach standing in the dining area…with a gash below his lower lip.  Dylan explains that he was running, tripped, and went face first into a bench.  And, apparently, his teeth went through his lip.

And there was blood. Lots and lots of blood. And there were tears. Lots and lots of tears.

So I calmed him down, cleaned him up, packed the boys in the car and headed to the ER.  I’d been down this road.  I knew the routine.

And a few hours later, we left the ER a few hundred dollars poorer. And with Zach looking like this:

Five stitches! He's a rockstar.

Five stitches, four stickers and two otter pops later, we were home.

Now we’re just getting prepped for our next hospital visit.  If all goes according to plan, it will be on Wednesday and I will be having a baby.  But I’m learning that with two crazy boys, you never know when you’ll end up in the ER.

Whose idea was it to have another one, anyway?

Holy crappola. I might have died seeing that. You’re a better woman than I for not passing out.

Also, can you wrap them in bubble wrap?

I can’t believe the same exact thing happened!! That’s just…bizarre. Well, rest up, momma. And here’s hoping for no more trips to the ER before Wednesday.

2 boys, identical injury…weird! I hope in 2 1/2-3 years, Kung Fu Fetus doesn’t end up in the ER with the same injury. Maybe you should start an ER fund just in case :-)

Must be a boy thing. My boy bit through his lip at 3 also (jumping on the bed and landed on the headboard). Neither of my girls did it. So it must be a genetic boy thing. You might as well schedule the ER for Kung Fu Fetus right now, maybe they’ll give you a discount!

Only 4 more days!!!! You must be pretty excited. I think I’ll drive to Bakersfield that day for my free sausage breakfast. It’s only 5 hours and I can call it a birth celebration in your honor!

I had a four and a two year old in august of 05. On august 2nd, my two year old fell on my four year old and he cracked his forehead open on the closet door in their bedroom. We had to go to the ER for stitches. Not 5 days later, on august 7th, I had to bring the 2 yr old to the ER. Why? You guessed it. The four year old was chasing the two year old around their room and? He cracked his forehead open on the closet door.

The closet door came down and I hung a canvas curtains by a shower curtain pole there instead.

Boys are tons of fun! (ihave5)

We split open our foreheads here…two of my boys have and of course, myself.

We were at a birthday party today for a 6 year old that was held at our local fire station. As the kids were touring the station, one of the firefighters showed them a big map of the territory they covered. They asked for someone to give them an address to show the kids on the map. I volunteered our address and added…you have been there before and then they said, “hasn’t it been more than once?” when I admitted to three times there was a gasp among the attending parents. I HAVE THREE BOYS. Save your judgment people.

When my little dude had to get stitches at 14 months old, I wanted to die. Luckily, my husband hadn’t left for work yet, so he just came with us. Because seriously, I can’t handle that stuff man. The whole deal makes me faint…literally. I am a crappy mom when it comes to handling hospital procedures. Oh, and by the way….. only 4 more days???? are you excited or what? I’ve got until the end of November. SO yeah, that’s forever.

Trust me, I know. 3 boys. 8. 6 and 4 ever running, jumping, noise, oh the noise. The sounds omg.

Enjoy the Tminus fetus 4. It gets hectic. Anyone that says it’s not, well, buy them a bunch of liquor, get them saucy and they’ll open up. :O)
Happy thoughts for wednesday!

My son got exactly that same injury two weeks ago by doing a face-plant into a window sill. He managed to slice up the insides of his cheek pretty well, and to almost knock out a top tooth as well. Eight stitches, a tooth extraction and a lot of popsicles later, he is just fine. I feel your pain. I hope your son is healing as well.

Ouch x 2!! My son split the back of his head open on a goal post when he maybe 4? He still has the scar on his head. Boys are dangerous.

You should cushion Oliver in Bubble Wrap in a few years. :)
