First off, thank you all SO MUCH for your comments and suggestions and words of encouragement on my last post.
We saw the Pediatrician yesterday. After discussing Oliver’s issues, he told me that he’s not 100% sure that medication would do anything to help our situation. That it will probably just be a matter of time until Ollie’s muscles mature and can close appropriately. At which point I almost started to cry and told him that, for both our sakes, we had to at least TRY medication. My six week old shouldn’t be uncomfortable ALL THE TIME and I at least had to see if it would get me a little more sleep.
So he wrote me a prescription for Xanax and sent me on my way.
JUST KIDDING.
He prescribed Ollie some Zantac and then ordered three different immunization shots. Four if you count the oral dose of anti-Rotavirus. Which, YES PLEASE.
Anyhow, Oliver is an otherwise healthy specimen who weighed in at a whopping 11 pounds 7 ounces. Almost five full pounds more than he weighed a mere 6 1/2 weeks ago. At least the constant eating is good for something, right? RIGHT?!
We picked up his prescription last night and, after a single does, he slept a whopping 3 1/2 hours straight and was 10 times less noisy and squirmy throughout the night than he normally is.
Which may very well have been due to the Tylenol and immunizations. But, for now, we’re going to assume it was the meds. OKAY? DO NOT RUIN THIS FOR ME.
Other Random Crap
~Both older boys were sick this week. Dylan with a nasty sounding cough, Zach with a super random throwing up episode. Both were equally fun and non-stressful. And by non-stressful, I mean completely stressful. I did a lot of yelling “DON’T TOUCH THE BABY! IN FACT, DON’T EVEN LOOK AT THE BABY!”
So far, Oliver seems to be safe from any wayward brotherly germs. Fingers crossed.
~My dog ran away yesterday. In an interesting turn of events, the world’s dumbest dog figured out how to escape from our backyard. Five times. He even outsmarted the humans. He was gone most of the day, and between being secretly happy that I’d never have to take him to the vet or arrange and pay for boarding again, I was worried about him. Luckily, 8 hours after going missing, my phone rang. It was a woman two blocks up who had come home from work and discovered him in her backyard. We have no idea how he got in there, and after hearing about his day, I came to the conclusion that I need to buy her dog a new pack of tennis balls. Tahoe chewed up all of theirs. That fucking dog can’t even be gone for 8 hours without being a pain in my ass.
~When we went to Walgreens to pick up Ollie’s prescription, we looked like a little duck family. Mama duck in front with her little ducklings following behind. As usual, Zach was in the rear. He meanders his way through life. He looks around and notices the things going on around him. When he rides his bike on the sidewalk, he spends half his time in planters and on driveways because he’s never looking straight ahead.
So, anyway, we’re walking into Walgreens, the boys are behind me and this is in front of us:
Suddenly, I hear a CRASH. And then Zach starts to wank. I turn around, and realize that he WALKED INTO THE FLU SHOT INFORMATION TABLE. Because he was looking up at the giant cat. See that little frame sitting on the table? Yeah, that hit the floor and broke. Thankfully, I was able to piece it back together before anyone noticed. I can’t take them anywhere.
~I ordered a few different types of pacifiers on Tuesday in the hopes that Oliver would take to one of them. Pacifier sucking is supposed to be good for the discomfort of reflux, since it helps to produce extra saliva. When they arrived yesterday, I was a bit disappointed to see that one of the packs that was supposed to be blue and green was actually pink and purple. But then I thought about it and figured that, in Oliver’s eyes, color doesn’t matter. He’s so open minded. For him, it’s all about the nipple (typical man) and, if he actually likes them, I could always buy more in boy colors.
Of course, he likes them.
~ These particular pacifiers are Playtex “Most Like Mom” which, you know, makes sense. It seems natural that babies would take to a pacifier that reminds them of the nipple, whether breast or bottle, that they are used to.
However, my nipples look nothing like this:

I tried the paci too, and let me tell you, it worked fabulously. My last two didnt really care for the paci, this one, who had a bad stomach, and he is so comforted by the pacifier. Hope it continues to work. You might also find, like I did, that with the baby sucking on the paci, it might extend the distance between feeding time. Good luck and best wishes.
Both my boys LOVE these pacifiers. I had to buy dozens, seriously, I have at least 25 of these things, all over the house in whatever color I could find! You’re right, they don’t care what color it is, they don’t know gender specifics yet, I just use the “girlier” ones at home only. The boys are now 3 and 2 and still use them……
Those are the only kinds of pacis Livie will take! She’s had them since she was a few weeks old and won’t part with them. I love them though and glad they have pink and purple ones!
And Hannah is mykid who CONSTANTLY is looking at something else and walks into displays. figures!
I didn’t get a chance to comment on your last post but I have a friend in a very similar situation with her son who is around the same age as Ollie…He’s HUGE, tipping in at nearly 16 lbs at 9 weeks (double birth weight). Regardless of this, he wasn’t sleeping well and had silent reflux. they tried medications and then ordered an allergy pannel and a series of poop cultures. Very long story short, they think he had a virus that he picked up at birth (unplanned home birth) and that he’s lactose intollerant. My friend is off dairy and he did a round of antibiotics plus probiotics and now is a champ sleeper. If the meds don’t work, get a second opinion and trust your mommy instinct!
I’m a relatively new reader to your blog (found out through Heather’s blog) and I just love it! I was laughing out loud TWICE while reading this post! =) Mainly because my 3.5 year old would have done the same thing while looking at that (admittedly huge) cat! You are a wonderful writer and your boys are beautiful!
glad you found a paci that works! By the way… those paci’s are awesome to fill with water, then throw in the freezer for when they are teething! My daughter is over 2 and still loves chewing on a frozen one! (as long as you don’t mind a little water squirting out while it defrosts)
Krissy – AWESOME idea!! Thank you!
I love Zach Zach!

This is so funny! I really enjoyed reading your blog.. I really admire your sense of humor.. Thanks for the post!
LOL why do you have to take a picture like that(with the nipple) anyway rearing kids is not an easy task ,being a mother is a life long 24 hours career, no benefits given, leave of absent is absolutely a taboo.
Xoxoxo! go pacifier lol ..;)
