The Favorite Parent

by Meghan on March 2, 2011

If you’re a parent, it’s likely that you’ve wondered who your kid’s “favorite” is. You know, which parent do they like more.  Which parent would they pick if they had to choose between the two of you.

Sadly, all too often, my kids pick my husband.  ”I want daddy to drive!” “I want daddy to take me!”  ”I want daddy to do it!”

Of course, I can’t really blame them.  He’s the one that plays with them when he walks in the door. He’s the one that takes them to 7-11 for Slurpees when he picks them up from school.  He’s the one that walks them to the park to play baseball while I sit home with a napping baby.

I’m the one who forces them to take baths and scrubs behind their ears. I’m the one who disciplines them most, since I spend the most time with them.  I’m the one who returns them to their bed when they find their way into our room in the middle of the night.  I’m the one who makes them do homework and clean up their rooms.  I’m in charge of most of the boring and not so nice stuff, while he gets to do most of the fun!  exciting! not boring! stuff.

And it sucks.

So, when something special comes along and it’s something that *I* get to do with them, I take full advantage. To that end, Disney’s Imagination Movers came to Santa Barbara a few weeks ago.  That sort of outing isn’t really up my husband’s alley (especially on a work night) and we thought it would be easier if we left the baby behind anyway.

So, I got to take Dylan and Zach out for a date.

We had so much fun.  I didn’t have to discipline or say no.  We ate popcorn and, for once, I got to buy the Slupree!

I know my kids don’t *love* my husband more than they love me.  And I know that we have more fun together than not, but it’s nice sometimes to remind them, and myself, that I’m not always the meanie.

For all of our sakes, I need to do it more often.

That’s so cool! I can’t wait ’til the IMs come to our area! I’m excited to take my girls. We all go together (Daddy too) to stuff like that and we always have the best time!

I know it feels that way, when you have to step in and deal with something and daddy gets to do the fun stuff but trust me, they do appreciate it and when they have grown they will remember all you did to guide them and shape them. They will remember all the times you kissed scraped knees and sang lullabies. They will know the work and effort you made to everything for them.

I SOOOOOO hear you on this one! I know exactly what you mean. When Jenna asks 10,000 times during the day: “When is Daddy coming home?” I start to feel like chopped liver.

The looks on their little faces in that picture is priceless. Pure JOY. Love it. So glad you had the chance to do this. Thanks for the reminder that *I* need to do things like this more often too.
