Changing My Lifestyle: One Low-Carb Meal and Exercise Routine at a Time

by Meghan on May 26, 2011

Last week I got a bee up my bonnet and decided it was time to get into shape. It *might* have had something to do with the fact that I was about to post a picture of myself in a bathing suit for the entire internet to see. Or, it could have been the reasons I laid out here. Probably it was a little bit of both.

Anyway, I started eating low-carb on Saturday and on Tuesday I started the 30 Day Shred exercise program. And it kicked my ass. Five minutes into it I wasn’t entirely sure if I’d be able to finish it.

And then I did. And although I was a bit sore when I got up to do it again the next morning, I got through it. I was tired and sore and OMG, my calves and thighs huuuuuuurt, but I DID it.

And today, on day 3, I did it again. I took a couple of Advil first thing in the morning, because I knew if my muscles hurt, I’d be less willing to finish the entire workout. And it was better.  Throughout the workout, I wasn’t as out breath. I didn’t stop to take as many sips of water (which is technically against the rules, but hey, a girl’s gotta stay hydrated!). I made it through most of the movements without stopping to take a break. I did have to stop a few times during the “jumping” activities because my muscles were tensing up and I had to stop to get them to relax before I could continue. It was still hard and I was breathing heavy and sweating and I definitely had to push myself, but I didn’t feel like I was going to pass out during it.

I’m actually excited to see what the next few days are like. I’ve heard that by day 5 you can see a change in your body and although I’m not going to get my hopes up, I think that I’ll definitely be seeing a change sometime soon.

And the low-carb eating isn’t nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. I generally live on pasta and sandwiches and gnocchi, so I went into this thinking I would NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER be able to do it. But I have. And it’s actually tasted pretty damn good. Wrapping sandwich, taco, fajita and burger items in lettuce is a great way to eat for me, because it feels like you’re eating something substantial, and you get a great crunch, but you’re not getting the calories and carbs that come with tortillas and bread. The fact that I can still eat sour cream and salsa also helps. A lot.

Zachary is even embracing the low-carb lifestyle and after finishing off his peanut butter and jelly sandwich yesterday, he “helped” me eat my lunch of rotisserie chicken, black beans, low-fat cheese, hot sauce, sour cream and salsa. And then he asked if he could have it again for dinner.

I’d kill for a piece of pizza and a milkshake, but I’m going to see this through for a bit and see just how dedicated I can be. I will definitely reintroduce carbs soon, but I’m going to do my best to make sure I don’t eat them as often and as much in the future.

The only major downside so far? Coffee without sugar isn’t a great motivator to get out of bed in the morning. That’s going to take a lot of getting used to.

I love the 30 day shred and just did it last month for a trip to South beach. I saw great results right away and will definitely use this video throughout the summer. Good job on all of the changes you are making. Sounds so promising!

Jillian scares the crap out of me (are you really not allowed to have water?) so I’m starting with Bob Harper’s walking video, and the jumping jacks?! Jesus! What IS that?

The 30 day shred is hard. I was close to tears on day 1 and 2 during the switch from push ups to whatever those things are called when you lift the weights over your head while you are in chair position. You are going to be smokin after 30 days of that. I haven’t put on a bathing suit in god knows how long. Yay you!

I’m sure I’ll be looking for a good post-partum workout soon enough, so I’ll be interested to see how this one goes for you – but congrats on starting, AND making it through the first (and usually hardest!) few days! GO YOU! :)

Congrats to you, I too have been thin all my life and now hitting close to 60 the weight is starting to “stick”. I’ve been watching the junk food, snacks at night, and walking more, boy just that little bit has made a difference. I agree with you, exercise just doesn’t seem “fun”. You may be my motivator to exercise, keep it up, and let us know your results. Way to go!

You are amazing. I can neither do no carb nor deal with the 30-day shred for longer than, um, 18 days.
