As most parts of the country are welcoming in Summer weather, here in Santa Barbara we’re gearing up for what is affectionally knows as “June Gloom.” You see, historically the weather for most of the month of June is overcast and cool and foggy and…gloomy. It’s not necessarily beach going weather. Or even sit outside in the evening and have a glass of wine weather. It’s the opposite of what you expect when you picture Summer on the beach in California.
Of course, being June 1st, today was a beautifully sunny, if a bit windy, day. But in non-weather events, it was GLOOMY. It started with a phone call from my mom this morning telling me that my Grandma had fallen and was being taken via ambulance to the ER*. She didn’t have any more information than that, and was on her way out the door to head to the hospital.
The information began coming in, in bits and pieces. Very low blood pressure. Lots of pain and nausea. She hadn’t hit the ground, but had fallen into her dresser, then went back to bed and felt very sick and it hurt to breathe. Tests revealed a raging infection, which accounted for her weakened state which accounted for the fall. The fall resulted in three broken ribs and a lacerated spleen. The lacerated spleen required emergency surgery. By the time the Doctors had it removed, she had lost half of her blood volume.
But, being the tough old gal that she is, she made it through. She has a (hopefully) brief stint in the ICU ahead of her and barring any further complications, should be out of the hospital within the week. My fingers are crossed that she will recover quickly and fully.
Hopefully, June can only improve from here.
*Oddly enough, this column of mine is running on Noozhawk right now. The irony is not lost on me.
