As a general rule, I have very oily skin. Very oily skin that is *really* prone to breakouts. It is far from awesome. In fact, it has been a pretty constant source of embarrassment, stress and annoyance to me for the better part of 16 years.
As an almost 33 year old, I’m starting to get a handle on it.
To a degree.
I have found a few products that, when used consistently, keep the breakouts kind of under contro. Except for that week a month when my hormones are out of control and it’s like Spring Break for pimples. They party so hard, I half expect them to film their own Pimples Gone Wild movie.
But for the majority of the month, I have a system that works. My breakouts are somewhat minimal, and my oily skin is pretty much under control.
My favorite face wash for Spring and Summer is Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser.

But then the seasons change, fall arrives and instead of oily skin, I suddenly have the driest skin in the whole wide world. And in all honestly, I’d much rather have oily skin than dry skin. Because dry skin is pretty uncomfortable.
So come fall, I switch up my routine a bit. Instead of using my regular face wash I use something that exfoliates while it cleans. This year, I tried Aveeno’s new Daily Detoxifying Scrub.
So far, I love it. It smells great, and the “scrubby” part isn’t too intense, so I don’t feel like I’m scraping half my face off.
I also up my usage of my beloved Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream. I apply it extra liberally at night during the dry months.
And in the morning, I use the tried and true Olay Moisturizer with SPF. Because even in winter you need to keep up with your sunscreen routine!
I’m tempted to try out Olay’s (new?) Pro-X Clear Acne Protocol System, but I’m afraid to mess with a good relatively decent system, so I might put it off until Spring rolls around again.
If you used to be like me, but have found a system that keeps your skin clear and awesome, will you share your secrets? Please?

My Mom has the most beautiful skin ever and her only beauty routine has been washing her face and moisturizing with Oil of Olay. My sisters and I all use it religiously!

Hey Meghan! I use the Aveeno calming face wash too, but I also use the lotion. I think it has SPF in it — is there another reason that you prefer the Olay moisturizer? I’m pretty happy with the Aveeno, but I’m always curious about different products…I’m especially glad to hear about the Aveeno scrub, I’ve been curious about it for a while but haven’t bought any to try.
Hi Stephanie!
You know, I remember my mom using it as a kid and I loved the smell…so it’s what I’ve always bought! And, to be honest, when I lived near a Target I often bought the Target brand! I really do love Aveeno products, though so I might try their lotion at some point!
I struggled with bouts of adult acne (which, of course, followed years of teenage acne – blah) until I started to use Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Clear Scrub twice a day. It really made a significant difference. I can’t even remember the last time I had a true pimple – sometimes I’ll notice a spot that looks like it *might* turn into one, but then I just make sure to scrub a little more in that area for the next day or so and it totally goes away. Highly recommend trying it!
Where can i get Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream?

I use Jason Tea Tree Oil soap on my face only once a day (at night in the shower). I have tried so many products for my acne-prone skin: from proactive, to prescriptions. I’ve actually found that the more I put on my face, the worse it gets. So I decided to stop washing my face twice a day and it immediately got better. I also use the Jason Tea Tree Oil soap because it is sulfate free, which is good to keep skin moist. I then put on some aloe vera gel that I mix with tea tree oil. The aloe vera moisturizes and helps get rid of redness and the tea tree oil is actually proven to be as effective as benzoyl peroxide over long periods of time. I know get about one small pimple before that time of the month, when I used to be covered in them.
