Sometimes, “Americans” Make Me Sick. Also, Lowe’s.

by Meghan on December 12, 2011

Every so often I read something that makes my jaw drop and literally takes the ability to form a coherent thought out of my head.

Instead of coming up with a valid argument or witty retort, I sit and stare at my computer and think in some sort of garbled alien language.

This happened to me just now, when I read Buzzfeed’s compilation of the Top 25 Dumbest Comments on Lowe’s Facebook page. If you don’t already know, Lowe’s recently pulled all of their advertising from the TLC show “All-American Muslim” after bigoted religious groups voiced their displeasure that Lowe’s would support the “Muslim religion.”

Buzzfeed uses the term “dumbest,” but I feel like bigoted, disgusting, hateful or idiotic might also work.

I’m no History  major, but if I remember correctly, the First Amendment of the UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION expressly prohibits our government from establishing, or favoring, a religion.

How have we, as Americans, arrived at a place where it is acceptable to openly discriminate against, and in some instances even persecute, people for their religious beliefs? I honestly can not understand how that is okay, let alone celebrated. How does being Christian allow (some) people to act like assholes? RIDDLE ME THAT.

Yes, there are extremists out there. And they suck. Sadly, they belong to EVERY religion.

On another note, the One Million Moms campaign is at it again. They’ve launched an attack on Macy*s for firing an employee who refused to follow company policy. This employee, because it goes against her religious beliefs, wouldn’t allow a transgendered woman to enter the women’s changing room. OMM is up in arms, saying that this employee was unfairly fired, and was discriminated against…for discriminating. I can’t wrap  my brain around the logic of their argument.

I’m not sure if I can comment without screaming, but I’ll try. This is EXACTLY the reason I can’t listen to anyone’s argument against same sex marriage. You CAN NOT use your religion as the basis for establishing laws in the United States! You just can’t! I don’t need to be more eloquent than that because there’s no more to say. I don’t understand what part of that is so hard for people to understand.

this is the kind of thing that makes me want to apologize for other Christians. even though it’s totally not my job because I don’t think or act this way. It just makes me so mad and sad and the alien language takes over my brain, too.

The thing is, this Jesus guy, his example is pretty much entirely opposite of this kind of behavior. I just don’t know how people got so confused about that. Since it’s pretty clear. We are ALL loved. Just as we are. And ALL that.

I know some very, very good Christians, especially my uncle, the priest, who is one of the most intelligent, compassionate and rational men I’ve ever known. I feel truly sorry for the good ones who have the umbrella of Christianity sullied by these bigots.
And how do they not see that THEY are the extreme Christian counterpart to the extreme Muslim factions?

Oh, my. I wish I hadn’t clicked on that Buzzfeed link. I’m so full of rage now. How do they even let those comments stand?

What is really driving me wild right now is that a company as big as Lowe’s must have Muslim shoppers, sure, but EMPLOYEES! What are they thinking by doing this…basically telling people that work for them that they dont support them, and then allowing others to openly bash them? I’m disgusted. Not only would I support a boycott, but I wish every muslim employee, or those that support them, would walk off the job. Show them that you can’t do business without them.

It sounds like some of those commenters were at the Indiana University/Kentucky basketball game not too long ago. Sigh, I hate dumb people.

I am a Christian, and before I read about this whole thing last night, I’ve actually been watching the show on my “in demand”. I think if peopl were to watch it they would learn a lot more than what they “think” they already know about the religion. It’s not much different, and if we all followed their lead and actually “lived” our religion, things might be a whole lot different in the world. (the last episode I watched yesterday they were asked why are they so extreme, the answer was we aren’t extreme we just follow our god ad what our book says. ) I would have to say a lot of Christias can’t even say that because most of them are extreme hypocrites. Not that I even remotely agree with what Lowe’s did, but they’re not a government – they’re a business. They can choose not to advertise, and you can choose not to shop there.

@Jennifer – Right, exactly. My point was that the Constitution expressly allows people to celebrate ANY religion. So the people who are congratulating Lowe’s and saying that Muslims are “unAmerican” are…flat out wrong wrong. And hypocrits. Lowe’s is just really, really stupid for caving to them. REALLY. STUPID.

Happened to stumble upon this when goggle searching lowes for something I wanted. Did everyone forget about freedom of speech. I have a feeling all of you will be voting for Obama in January. Figures. Back to looking at lowes online

@Stacy, Freedom of Speech is alive and well. It’s actually another part of the First Amendment…just like Freedom of Religion. My point was, these jackholes complaining about the show and calling the people “un-American” because they are Muslim is EXACTLY OPPOSITE the point of the First Amendment. I just don’t see how we got to a point where it’s perfectly acceptable for some Americans to completely ignore part of our Constitution because it doesn’t fit with their bigoted world views.

And yes, I will absolutely be voting for Obama again…next NOVEMBER.
