The Multiple Personality Disorder of Toddlerhood

by Meghan on July 17, 2012

Oliver is so fun lately. At (almost) 23 months he is really coming into his own.

His personality is developing, and it is awesome.

He’s so much fun. He loves to play games, and he loves to make us laugh. He is quite the dancer and he still loves to jump. He’ll jump on anything, anywhere, any time. He’s like a little human kangaroo. Put him in a trampoline or bounce house and the kid is in his element. This also results in frequent bumps and bruises, but we’re not going to dwell on that…

His reaction to fireworks was so awesome, I still can’t get over it.

And this week he started counting, which is like, the most adorable thing ever. The way he says “six” kills me dead, every time. Which is quite often, because he’s obsessed with it and spends a good part of his waking hours counting.

Seriously, you guys. He’s adorable.

Except when he’s being a total jerkface which, lately, has been fairly often.

This kid has a TEMPER.

To be fair, he’s always had a temper, but now that he’s bigger and louder and more…capable of causing destruction, he’s pure trouble. When he’s mad he throws things. Before, he used to throw his pacifier. But now, in addition to his pacifier, he throws whatever is within arms reach. A toy, a book, a phone. Anything is fair game.

He also screams. Not crying screams, but high-pitched, pissed off shrieks of toddler anger. Very LOUD shrieks of toddler anger. It’s actually quite impressive. And very annoying.

In addition to the throwing of objects and screaming, he recently added a new move to his repertoire. We call it “the toddler topple.” If there’s something large nearby that he can topple, he does. The other day it was the laundry basket when I was so rude as to not allow him to play in the toilet. After that he swiped a board game off of a table.

The child has anger issues. Now, I know that a lot of it is that he’s a toddler and can’t convey his anger and frustration with words, so he uses what he knows. BUT, he’s also, without a doubt, the most temperamental of my children.

I’m kind of scared for our future. When he’s 10, he’s totally going to be the kid who like, knocks over the gatorade cooler when he strikes out in baseball. And at that point, counting to 13 and saying “six!” in a super cute voice isn’t going to make up for the fact that he’s an ass.

**As I was about to hit publish, I told him “NO!” (he was pushing the door so the handle would hit the wall) and he threw the tray to his booster seat on the ground. Seriously, I can’t make this stuff up.**

Oh, too cute! Meeka has become such a toddler recently (and is also showing some signs of a temper… and being really, really obstinate – which, um, yeah, she MAY have gotten from me) but still not much talking – it’ll be great when she gets there, too :)
